Mondo scribe Chris Purdie introduced me to the joys of Indonesian action master Arizal — a director so cool that, like McG, he only requires one name — and I can’t thank him enough for it. My first Arizal experience was American Hunter (1989). American Hunter was apparently a key influence for Benjamin Marra’s incredible Terror Assaulter (O.M.W.O.T.), which is, at this point in time, my favourite comic ever. The Arizal influence can definitely be seen in the ridiculous dialogue (“Let’s just say, [insert something stupid here]”), the relentless explosions, and, of course, the absurd fight scenes.
