This post is a bit indulgent. The reason why the US one sheet of Godzilla vs. Megalon (original title: Gojira tai Megaro) is this week’s poster is because I recently won it on ebay. It has been my most sought after poster for a while now. It hardly ever shows up for sale, so, despite the fact that my wallet is very light right now, I couldn’t resist the opportunity to throw down a bid. Godzilla vs. Megalon, made in 1973 and released in America in 1976, has a reputation for being the worst Godzilla film of all. It’s hard to argue with that – it’s pretty horrendous. But that doesn’t stop it from being an incredibly entertaining movie (far more entertaining than most of the Millennium series of Godzilla). Along with Megalon, we get Gigan and Jet Jaguar to add to the stupidity, and the underground-dwelling villains are amongst the most hilarious in Godzilla history. There is plenty of handshaking, high-fiving and posing from the monsters (and giant robot), which all adds to the insanity. I nearly fainted the first time I saw the one sheet poster below. With its wonderful painted artwork, it is absolute perfection. Best of all, it’s the ultimate misleading poster. At no point do Godzilla and Megalon take their battle to the World Trade Center, let alone New York. A fantastic piece of classic dodgy advertising it is indeed!
