Ted Kotcheff’s near verbatim adaption of Kenneth Cook’s novel Outback – retitled Wake in Fright in its cinematic form – is probably my favourite Australian film. It’s so full of brilliant moments it’s difficult to pinpoint only one, but this exchange towards the end of the film is pretty fantastic. Protagonist John Grant (Gary Bond) is broke, buggered and at his wit’s end as he releases this tirade aimed at aggressive outback hospitality.
