I – like many film nerds – salivate over Polish posters. They are far from your average promotional items and are rendered with jaw-dropping creativity by brilliant artists. In the past, Polish artists would slip hidden meanings and camouflaged political messages into their movie posters, whether it be for a local release or an American blockbuster. Polish posters are not always successful, and the recent slew of what I consider “fake” Polish posters are irritating cash-ins imitating past styles pathetically. But when a real Polish movie poster is good, it’s good. One of the finest is Wojciech Zamecznik’s beautiful poster for Mondo Cane. A far better poster than this obnoxious classic deserves, Zamecznik’s photo collage work is truly an impressive sight to behold. I’d love this for my own collection, but sadly its price tag – usually between 700 to 900 US dollars – towers far above my measly budget.
