Sweet Movie – German poster
Dusan Makavejev's Sweet Movie is the epitome of a divisive film. It also happens to be a personal favourite of mine, mixing the evocative with the funny, intense and plain gross.
Simon, King of the Witches – US poster
I shan't deny my interest in Occultsploitation and Simon, King of the Witches is a truly odd gem. . This poster is also an absolute delight, featuring a strange mix between Hammer-style composition with an early-70s acid-drenched colour scheme and pattern.
Black Eye – US poster
I am in deep love with this poster for the 1974 Blaxploitation gem Black Eye. It somehow exists in a design space at once utterly unhinged yet elegantly restrained.
Her Vengeance – Thai poster
Ngai Choi Lam's Her Vengeance — in its proper uncut form — is about as out of control as rape-revenge films come. Its native Hong Kong poster doesn't quite capture its chaotic brilliance, so I'll hand things over to Thailand.
The Devil’s Honey – Italian poster
Long before I watched The Devil's Honey, I had come across its extraordinarily sleazy poster. From the perky nips showing through an open dressing gown to the beautifully painted salivating dog, this is pretty much perfect 80s locandina trash.
High Priestess of Sexual Witchcraft – US poster
I thought I'd launch 2015's Poster of the Week series with a bang by presenting this gorgeously stylised design for Beau Bachanan's 1973 occult sleaze fest, High Priestess of Sexual Witchcraft.
Black Christmas – US poster
The original US one-sheet for Black Christmas is a cracker. It wraps one of the creepiest moments from the film in jarring Christmas cheer. The tagline is also perfect: If this picture doesn't make your skin crawl... it's on TOO TIGHT. YES!
New Wave Hookers – US poster
The New Wave Hookers series became quite popular in the mid-eighties and still enjoys a certain cult following. The content of the films in question is not as important to my designer mind as the posters.
Autopsy aka The Victim – US poster
This poster for Armando Crispino's 1975 Giallo Autopsy (aka The Victim) is beautifully executed. I particularly love the circular motif used for the O.
I Am a Ghost – US poster
In general, I don't tend to spruik modern movie posters because flashy modern designs rarely work for me, but this is a case of a modern design embracing the vintage look that I still, no matter how grating others are starting to find it, love.
Mothra vs. Godzilla – Japanese re-release poster
This advertisement is far from the usual beautifully rendered information-overload of a typical Godzilla poster. Its almost childlike artwork, reminiscent of the work of Shigeru Mizuki, is as endearing as it is befuddling.
