My pal Jack Douglas recently posted an image of the magical poster for Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla on my Facebook wall. This reminded me how drool-worthy Japanese posters for the Heisei (mid-80s to mid-90s) era’s Godzilla films were. When I was in Tokyo last year, my partner and I became patrons of a bar called Leo, the owner of which was a massive fan of Godzilla, Ultraman, darts and Kiss. The bar was filled with paraphernalia – Godzilla toys littered the bar, Ultraman books filled shelves and Kiss posters hung over the bar’s dart machine. The piece of Godzilla marketing that fascinated me the most was a framed collection of Godzilla cards featuring all the posters of the 1980s and 1990s Godzilla films. These posters were like some kind of geeky wet dream; their beautiful, painted excess something sorely missing from most 90s movie advertising. Enjoy!
