Even Miike’s most loyal of minions will tell you that Andromedia (1998) is not too crash hot. To be shamefully honest, I actually kind of like it, but of the sixtyish films of his that I’ve seen, it certainly ranks low. Andromedia, a silly sci-fi soap opera, is one of Miike’s most commercial efforts and stars not one but two J-Pop groups! The leading cast is made up of members of girl band, SPEED, while tough guy poseurs and boy band, Da Pump, feature in small roles. (The film also insanely has cinematographer Christopher Doyle, who you can see fucking dancing in the clip below, performing as the film’s villain – what the hell!) For some bizarre reason, Da Pump, despite their minimal screen time, is allowed to perform one of their musical atrocities, which entirely and hilariously interrupts the film, while still being part of the movie’s reality. It even dishes out an important plot point hidden among the ‘N Sync dance moves. Enjoy. Or not.
